about the futon shop

futon shop showroomWe opened The Futon Shop in 1987 after several years experience making futons at our previous shop Bringing It All Back Home. Our first business opened in 1974 under the name Freewheelin' and the beds we made in those days were waterbeds. Well, it was the seventies! We've always been concerned to make top quality futons and we soon found we were selling across the country, not just in Sheffield, and In 1998 we opened this website, www.futonshop.co.uk. We were soon selling as many beds as futons and in 2000 we changed the name of our shop to the Natural Bed Company.

The Natural Bed Company is located in Sheffield's Devonshire Quarter which during our 25 years here has changed beyond recognition, it's now one of the coolest alternative shopping streets in Sheffield. We used to make the futons and frames on the premises but soon needed more manufacturing space and workshops are now a couple of miles away in the industrial part of town. Sheffield's always been known for it's quality manufacturing and we are proud to have been awarded the 'Made in Sheffield' hallmark for quality manufacturing.

We use high quality materials, solid timber and skilled craftsmanship to make comfortable modern furniture that will stand the test of time. We deliver throughout the UK and many countries worldwide; our design and construction techniques ensure quick and easy self assembly.

Our design and construction techniques, high quality materials, solid timber and skilled craftsmanship ensure that your futon bed or sofa will stand the test of time. They're designed for quick and easy self assembly so you can carry them easily to your room and be sure that the construction will be solid, reliable and long lasting.

Our commitment to quality and service is underlined by our membership of the Furniture Ombudsman and the Guild of Master Craftsmen; we were founder members of The Sleep Council. More importantly, we receive a great deal of positive feedback from our customers – to view some of the letters, click here

When we started our business over 35 years ago, customer contact was always face to face - nowadays most of the of the conversations are on the phone or by email but you can rest assured that all your enquiries will receive the same personal attention. Some frequently asked questions are answered on the FAQ page.

We are Peter Bennion and Kay Wallace. In the showroom and on the phone you'll also meet our colleagues Caro and Paula Whitehead, Amanda, Chris, Matt and Mike.

You can choose your futon from a range of colours which you can view on the fabrics page, if you'd like an actual sample of fabric we can easily post that to you. The same goes for samples of wood, you can view the colours on the timbers page and we can also post you a timber sample. Of course if you come to the shop in Sheffield, not only will you be able to see everything up close but you'll also be able to see our collection of bedding and lighting.

Before you finish buying remember that we also sell goose down pillows and duvets, organic bed linen, mattress protectors and our own collection of duvet covers and quilts that we design in India - perfect for your new bed!

Tibet

tibet

The Futon Shop has supported the cause of the Tibetan people since 2000. We donate £1 from every order to support schools in Tibet and young, and old, Tibetans struggling with life in exile. China has occupied Tibet for the last 60 years and destroyed much of the Tibetan Buddhist culture. It's estimated that one fifth of the Tibetan people have been killed and over 300,000 Tibetans have escaped over the Himalayas, many now live in exile in northern India.
