Loft beds
The main requirement for a loft bed is that it will pass through the opening into the loft space and then be easily assembled ‚ and dismantled if you move house. The Futon Shop has several designs that make excellent loft beds.
If the ceiling height in the loft is limited you will probably need a low bed ‚ the models to consider are the Nevada, Kumo, Oregon and Arizona. Possibly also the Sahara and Kandahar. These are available in a selection of timbers including walnut, maple and oak. The Nevada, Kumo and Sahara are also made in pine which will give you a designer bed at a very reasonable price. Low bedside tables are also made for these designs.
All these beds are ideal in an attic where the roof slopes down to the eaves and a low level bed is essential. If you're really tight for space they can all be made without headboards and in special sizes.
If you want your loft space to be more versatile, a folding futon base is the answer. Like the bed bases they will easily pass through the opening into the loft where they can be assembled. All the Futon Shops' futon sofas are ideal ‚ they make comfortable beds and convert easily to modern sofas.
Loft beds are available in a complete range of sizes including single, double, king size and superking size. Most can be made in special sizes to fit a particular space or in small sizes for a child loft bed.
The Oregon and Arizona are often called platform beds - the mattress sits on an oversized frame which gives you a flat platform surround to rest your coffee mug.
Futons mattresses are supplied rolled up in a polythene tube and are an ideal mattress to go through a small loft opening (keep the tubing in case you want to take it back out later).
Relaxsan and Waterlattex mattresses will also go easily into a loft space ‚ they come vacuum packed in a polythene tube which is then removed so the mattress can open out to it's full size. Of course, once it's opened out you need to make sure you can get it back out!
