Waterlattex mattress on Oregon Bed

Mattresses

The key factors for a mattress are comfort and support

The correct support will depend partly on your weight, profile and sleeping position. To keep your spine properly aligned, the mattress should neither be too soft nor too hard. Too soft and it will not support your spine; too hard and it will cause pressure on your hips and shoulders. A general rule is that the greater your weight, the firmer the mattress that is needed to support you. We'd advise you to avoid a very firm mattress if you sleep on your side and have wide hips.

Comfort is very subjective; some people prefer a firmer mattress to others. When choosing a new mattress bear in mind your opinions about your current mattress and others you’ve slept on.

Our selection will give you a range of firmness options, all with excellent long term back support. Our advice and recommendations are based on our opinions and observations and feedback from customers in our showroom.

Before the full details, here is a summary:

Some of these mattresses are supplied vacuum packed and delivered as a rolled up tube – see below for details. Carry them to the bedroom, place on the bed, remove the wrapping and watch them expand to their full size. They are hypoallergenic, resistant to dust mites and recommended for allergy sufferers. Some people find that they are a warmer sleep than a pocket sprung mattress – you may need a thinner duvet. Futons are cool mattresses.

We also make Futon mattresses which can be used both for our beds and futon sofa beds.

Memory Firm (firm)

Memory foam is the newest innovation in mattress design for many years. Memory foam feels inert and has no ‘bounce’ - in fact it isn’t inert, memory foam subtly reacts to your warmth and weight by softening under your warmth and weight, especially under your hips and shoulders. It adjusts to your profile and creates a comfortable surface that helps good circulation, relaxes your muscles and joints and aids a deeper sleep.

Some people have tried memory mattresses and not liked them because they were too soft. The first thing we would say is that not all memory mattresses are the same, far from it. We’ve selected two similar models, one firmer than the other; in neither case do you sink too far into the mattress. Both use a top layer of high quality memory foam (with an open cell structure to avoid overheating) on a high density base foam.

*If you’re concerned about being too warm, order it with the Outlast cover which will keep you cool
• easy maintenance, not reversible, simply rotate top to bottom once a month
• can be made in special sizes, eg 7’ long
• approx 20cm thick
• supplied rolled
• can be made in special sizes, eg 7’ long.
• made in the UK

Futon Mattress (firm)

A modern version of the traditional Japanese mattress. We have over 20 years experience as specialist futon makers using the best quality materials and construction techniques to produce superior quality futons. Our futons are made in the traditional way with square boxed corners and a zip around three sides so that we can fit the filling right into the corners. The filling is carefully added one layer at a time until the correct thickness is attained.

Our futons are filled with layers of cotton and polyester felts. The cotton layers create the essential ‘futon’ style, they contribute to firmness and the “cool in summer, warm in winter” character. The polyester layers are springier, lighter in weight and increase the futon’s comfort and life span.

There is a choice of colours for the futon case: calico (unbleached, off-white), navy blue, amethyst, wine, coral, forest green, harmony green, stone and chocolate. Calico is the usual choice if the futon is for a bed. The colours are usually chosen for sofa-beds. (The cover is not removable).

Futons are finished with coloured ties which pass through the futon and keep the filling in position. Choose from: natural, black, navy or grey ties.

You can also have a removable loose cover: loose covers fit neatly over the futon; there is a zip around three sides so they can be easily removed for cleaning. They are an excellent way to change the colour and appearance of your futon when you redecorate.

Loose covers can be made from the cotton fabrics listed above and also from a range of faux suede fabrics including ice blue, terracotta, biscuit and latte. If you order a faux suede cover you must order the futon with a calico case.

Loose covers should be washed on a 30 degree setting and cool dried.

Fabric samples for futons and covers on request.

For the Cuba sofa bed we supply a 7 layer futon. For the Tokyo, Fiji and Panama sofa beds we supply a 6 layer futon (a 7 layer is too thick to easily fold into the sofa shape with these models).

For regular use as a bed we recommend a 7 layer futon. If you want a 7 layer 1.80m futon you will need to use a 3 layer and a 4 layer futon together. If you weigh over 95Kg you will need to use two 4 layer futons - or one of our other types of mattress.

  • Futons become firmer over time but will typically last between 5 and 10 years. Good maintenance is essential to maximise the life of your futon - the cotton in a futon will absorb the moisture trapped under the quilt when you sleep. You must air your futon and fluff up the fibres by rolling it up and turning it over once a week - more often if you perspire heavily. Roll it up like a Swiss roll in the morning, roll it out again at night. If you use it on the floor you should do this on alternate days.
  • futons can be made in special shapes and sizes
